An IP address is assigned to a computer from the router’s DHCP server not for permanent use but for a specific period. This is called the lease time of an IP address. When the lease time expires, the IP address is again considered free, and the client must request a new one (it can, however, be the same one).

For Windows 10, the best approach is to open Command Prompt, type, and enter ipconfig /all in the command line window. Doing that, you should see the DHCP lease time on your screen. One of the advantages of knowing how to check DHCP lease time is that you’ll get a better idea of when the leased IP address will expire.

The Lease Time indicates how long a device is allowed to use that IP Address. Now, this is important because the amount of available IP Addresses is limited in a network.

Typically, the DHCP lease time default setting on most servers is 24 hours. However, this may be shorter or longer depending on your own server. Settings can be adjusted from one minute up to a certain number of days.

Here is the answer: when you renew a Wi-Fi lease, it may reset the DHCP of your router, which is used to automatically send IP addresses and configurations to the IP host in the network. By doing so, a new IP address may be reassigned to your device.

On your router’s web interface, look for an advanced settings category called LAN, and access it. On the router’s LAN configuration page, select the DHCP Server tab (or section). In the DHCP Server settings, look for an option called Lease time. This is the router’s DHCP lease time that you’ve been searching for.

If the lease expires, the client must immediately discontinue its use of the current IP address. The DHCP client then begins the DHCP lease discovery process in an attempt to lease a new IP address.

To release the current settings for all network adapters, type ipconfig/release at the command line. Then renew the lease by typing ipconfig/renew. To only renew a DHCP lease for all network adapters, type ipconfig/renew at the command line. You can check the updated settings by typing ipconfig/all at the command line.

Click Start->Run, type cmd and press Enter. Type ipconfig /release at the prompt window, press Enter, it will release the current IP configuration. Type ipconfig /renew at the prompt window, press Enter, wait for a while, the DHCP server will assign a new IP address for your computer.

Renewing a DHCP lease means requesting a new IP address from a wireless network and routing data from the DHCP server. You will be asked to renew your DHCP lease if the modem-router you are attempting to connect to manages DHCP and/or “mac addresses” services.

How do I change my IP lease time?
