In Settings, click System > Default apps > Set defaults by app. In the list under Set your default programs, find the version of OneNote that you’d like Windows to use as the default, and then click Set this program as default. For example, click OneNote (desktop) if you want to always open notebooks in OneNote 2016.

To quickly get to your preferred Windows version of OneNote, you can pin its app icon to your Start menu or the Windows taskbar. In Windows 10, click the Start button in the lower left corner of the Windows task bar, and then scroll down in the list of installed apps until you see OneNote.

Sign in to Office.com with your Microsoft account, or work or school account. Select OneNote. Select the notebook that you want to open. Work in your notebook just like you do in the OneNote app on your desktop or mobile device.

Create a shortcut & paste the OneNote page hyperlink into it. Name the shortcut something like “Todo list”. Click Finish. Right click on the Shortcut icon you just created.

You can do this by simply hovering over the first instance of OneNote, pressing and holding the SHIFT key and clicking the left mouse button. This will open a duplicate instance of OneNote. By doing this, you can work on two different Notebook sections simultaneously.

This can be done in OneNote for desktop by going to File, Info, and selecting “View Sync Status”. There you can see all notebooks available to you and by clicking “Sync Now”, this should restore your work.

To change the default location of your OneNote notebooks, go to File > Options > Save & Backup, select the Default Notebook Location, and click Modify. You can also select new locations for your Quick Notes Section and the Backup Folder. Click OK in the bottom right to save your changes.

If you have a notebook stored locally on your computer that you wish to move to the cloud, go to File > Share in OneNote and pick a web location such as OneDrive, and then click Move Notebook. OneNote will upload the notebook to OneDrive and set up direct sync.

Files>Favorites>Documents on my OneDrive, despite the fact that there is a Files>OneNote folder.

Go to Settings/Apps/Default Apps and scroll to ‘set defaults by app’. This should bring up a list of apps – select on the OneNote 2016 app that is the ‘online’ icon (not the ‘desktop’ icon).

The OneNote desktop app is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you’re using a 64-bit edition of Windows and a 64-bit version of Office 2019 or Microsoft 365, the 64-bit version of OneNote is installed automatically, otherwise you’ll get the 32-bit version.

Press the Windows button in the lower-left corner of your screen, and then click Settings. In Settings, click System > Default apps > Set defaults by app. In the list under Set your default programs, find the version of OneNote that you’d like Windows to use as the default, and then click Set this program as default.

In Settings, click System > Default apps > Set defaults by app. In the list under Set your default programs, find the version of OneNote that you’d like Windows to use as the default, and then click Set this program as default.
