A simplified version of Photoshop available on the web
This is the big news announced as part of the Adobe MAX 2021 event: a beta version of Photoshop on the web is deployed on Chrome and Edge. You thus have access to a series of functionalities such as the opening of files on your browser, basic modifications to retouch your images, or the possibility of leaving comments, within the framework of a project carried out as a team, and this without the need to download or launch the Photoshop software.
Starting today, you’ll see limited editing features, such as simple layers, selection tools, and more. We start with workflows for retouching and adjusting images, some of Photoshop’s most common use cases, says Pam Clark, senior Photoshop product manager at Adobe.
Improvements to the object selection tool
If you use Photoshop software on a computer, you now have the possibility to select an object on an image simply by hovering over it and performing a single click. While most objects in a photo can be detected using Sensei AI’s machine learning models, new categories of objects will soon be available.
Selections made with the Object Selection Tool are now more precise and retain more detail in the edges of the selection, meaning you spend less time getting those perfect selections.
Another handy feature of the Object Selection Tool, Photoshop allows you to easily generate masks for all elements that are detected in a layer with just one click. To do this, go to Choose Layer > Mask All Objects to make the masks appear for each object, like here for the 3 horses that make up the photo below.
New neural filters
Launched at the previous edition of the Adobe MAX event, neural filters offer you a huge time saver when editing your images. This year, Photoshop is adding 3 new beta filters to the Filters workspace. Neural Filters.
Landscape Mixer
It allows you to create a new scene by combining two landscape images together, without having to create the same effect manually: adding autumn leaves on a sunny summer landscape or going from a photo taken at noon with a color of late afternoon sun, for example.
Color Transfer
Applying colors from a reference image to another visual is made easy with this neural filter. The transfer of the color palette is done quickly, which saves you time in obtaining the final result you are looking for.
Harmonization
This is to match the color and tone of an element of a layer with another. Adobe Sensei technology automatically adjusts hue and brightness to create a new look for your photography.
Photoshop on desktop also brings improvements on some existing neural filters:
- Depth Blur: to obtain a more natural blurred background while maintaining the sharpness of the subject, thanks to the possibility of adding grain to the blur in order to compensate for the effect,
- Superzoom: to zoom on an entire image and no longer just on a delimited area,
- Style Transfer: to apply an effect more pictorial and artistic » based on models specific to the styles of great painters (Picasso, Van Gogh, etc.) and the use of optimized presets,
- Colorize: to transform an initially black and white image with more vivid and natural colors, thanks to the latest update of this neural filter.
Other features of Photoshop on desktop
Other features built into Photoshop on desktop include:
- 3 new types of gradients with classic mode (same parameters as before), perceptual mode (closer to how light is perceived in the real world) and linear mode (similar to natural light for a greater variety of results),
- Better management of comments to facilitate collaborative work, by creating public or private links that refer to the Creative Cloud website, with the possibility of reading, creating, replying to or pinning annotations on your work from a dedicated panel,
- Interoperability between Photoshop and Illustratorwhich allows you to copy and paste vector shapes from Illustrator (rectangles, polygons, circles, lines, paths, etc.) while retaining editable attributes in Photoshop like fill, stroke, blending mode, and opacity »,
- Improved language support for text layerswhich takes into account the unified and transparent typography of scripts and languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese, Korean…),
- Functionality Export Aswhich becomes the default export mode on all operating systems (and no longer only on the Macintosh M1), with also a new layer preview mode.
What’s new in Photoshop on the iPad
For its tablet version, Photoshop wanted to meet the expectations of its users. Thus, the function that supports Camera Raw files is now also available on iPad. In particular, it allows you to adjust the light (exposure, shadows, etc.), the color (hue, saturation, etc.), the details (texture, clarity), or even the optics, by automatically adjusting the corrections of your camera’s lens. photo.
You can now import and adjust your raw photos from iPhone 12 and 13 Pro (ProRAW) or your digital cameras. Edit your images with adjustments and settings that take advantage of the power of Adobe Camera Raw.
Converting Layers to Smart Objects
Any layer or group of layers can be converted into Smart Objects, giving you the flexibility to group and arrange them together, however you like.
Dodge and Burn tools available on tablet
Features photographers love for editing their work, tools Dodge and Burn, initially accessible on desktop, can also be used in Photoshop on iPad. They allow you to lighten or darken areas of your image, or to adjust ” the range for shadows, midtones, brush roundness and angle “.
Also note that comment management, announced for Photoshop on desktop, is also available on iPad.
